Last year, the Songshan Lake Boxes Art Museum in southern China presented an exhibition curated by Selima Niggl that, for the first time, traced the genealogy of Munich-based artist groups from SPUR (founded in 1957) to the still-active King Kong Kunstkabinett in this form, bringing it into dialogue with another contemporary Munich collectives as well as with Chinese projects. On the occasion of the catalogue being published following the exhibition, Stiftung van de Loo is now presenting an excerpt from this project.

The exhibition traces a continuous Munich tradition of collective painting dating back to 1957 – from SPUR through RADAMA, WIR, GEFLECHT, the Kollektiv Herzogstraße, and the WeibsBilder to the King Kong Kunstkabinett. These groups combine socio-political engagement with a commitment to free, expressive painting, repeatedly moving beyond the classical form of painting and reaching out into the surrounding space. An important link within this genealogy is the Kinderforum van de Loo, which has existed since 1970.

As a contemporary counterpart, the Beautiful Formula Collective (BFC), founded in 2012, not only practices collective painting itself, but has also been inviting people from outside the group to paint together through its format “The Beautiful Formula Syndicate” since 2014. The exhibition is complemented by contributions from the Boxes Group, based at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and the XI SAN Chorus, an artists’ group from Guangdong Province active since 2017. Under similarly challenging conditions to those faced by SPUR in its time, the group seeks exchange within the social sphere through collective practice rather than pursuing the idea of the individual artist as an autonomous figure.
