Painting is the application of colour(s) by hand or any kind of tool to a surface. This means a painter has to deal with colour, surface and movement. Countless colour systems are known by now, the division of the surface has also become a science, but the movement in painting remains an unexplored forest. The movements in the one-after-another of time and the side-by-side of the surface were and are my guidelines in painting to this day. At 17 I did not yet know this so precisely, but I experienced rhythm in the application of colours intensely for the first time. In my mid-twenties it became clear to me that rhythm gives form to the application of colour.
Rhythm brings the primary qualities of painting into being. When the rhythm of the colour on the surface is right, the painting is right. I have colour and a surface before me. I apply the colour to the surface and get 1, 2 or 8. I paint until I have beat the surface!
Die Malerei ist das Anbringen von Farbe(n) mittels der Hand oder irgendeines Werkzeugs auf eine Fläche. Das heißt, ein Maler hat zu tun mit Farbe, Fläche und Bewegung. Man kennt mittlerweile unzählige Farbsysteme, auch die Teilung der Fläche ist zur Wissenschaft geworden, aber die Bewegung beim Malen bleibt ein unerforschter Wald. Die Bewegungen im Nacheinander der Zeit und im Nebeneinander der Fläche waren und sind meine Leitlinien in der Malerei bis heute. Mit 17 Jahren wusste ich das noch nicht so genau, aber ich habe den Rhythmus beim Anbringen von Farben zum ersten Mal intensiv erlebt. Mit Mitte 20 wurde mir klar, dass der Rhythmus dem Anbringen von Farbe eine Form gibt.
Der Rhythmus bringt die primären Eigenschaften der Malerei zum Erscheinen. Wenn der Rhythmus der Farbe auf der Fläche stimmt, stimmt das Gemälde. Ich habe Farbe und eine Fläche vor mir. Ich bringe die Farbe auf die Fläche und bekomme 1,2 oder 8. Ich male bis ich die Fläche besiegt habe!
